GOTHIC SCRIPT CALLIGRAPHY

The transition from Caroline Minuscule to Gothic calligraphy marks a significant change in European handwriting styles and techniques, reflecting shifts in artistic and cultural preferences during the medieval period. Originating in Western Europe around the 12th century, Gothic calligraphy became widely used in the Roman Empire and remained the primary writing style in Germany until the 20th century.

Gothic script is characterized by dense and angular strokes, narrow and complex letterforms, and a distinct contrast between thick and thin lines, giving it a dramatic appearance.

Littera Textualis Quadrata (Littera Textualis - "letters for the main text, high-grade formal writing": Quadrata "square, regular look") is closely associated with the Gothic period in art and architecture, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the time. This script was commonly employed for manuscripts, especially religious texts, legal documents, and prestigious literary works.
